Travel Tips
The following are some of our favorite travel tips to help assure the best trip possible:
Local Currency
Change money at banks, hotels etc., avoid changing money on the street or by small vendors.
Carry travelers checks whenever possible.
Check the exchange rate for your destination before leaving home.
If most of the providers you will be using during your trip accept credit cards, you may consider charging as much as possible and avoid carrying large sums with you when leaving.
Check if your destination has banks with ATM machines. Again you may consider using credit or bank cards when traveling instead of carrying cash.
Packing
Make a list of items to bring.
Bring the list with you and check that you have everything on your list on returning.
Try not to bring expensive jewelery with you.
Always pack shoes on the bottom of your suitcase, put smaller items into your socks and then into your shoes.
Always bring carry on luggage, so you can carry necessity items with you in case your suitcase gets lost.
Check the weather conditions at your destination and pack accordingly.
Try to have everything packed at least 24 hours before leaving on a trip. It will make leaving less stressful.
Medical
Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration on long plane rides.
Bring enough of your medication with you for your entire vacation.
Purchase non-prescription items (aspirin, toothpaste etc.) before you leave, these are usually cheaper at home.
Limit alcohol intake.
Get enough sleep the night before your trip.
Insurance
Buy travel insurance before leaving.
Check that your current medical coverage will cover any medical expenses while away from home.
Additional Tips
If you are a senior you may qualify for senior discounts.
Always pack an extra pair of glasses.
Bring comfortable walking shoes.
Bring clothes that are interchangeable.
When renting a car overseas, check before you leave to see if you need an international drivers license.
When hailing a cab make sure you take a registered one, not a gypsy cab.
Before tipping check your bills, in some countries a gratuity might already be added to your bill.
Check to see if you need a Visa , some countries including China, Brazil and India require a Visa in addition to a valid passport.
Always check that your Passport has not expired!
Order special airline meals at least 24 hours before your flight.
Ask for a cash price when settling a bill. Some service providers will extend discounts for cash payment to avoid credit card charges.
If you will be using electric devices that require AC, make sure that your power requirements can be met at your destination (you may need voltage convertors).
If using computers that require modem connections make sure that you have the proper cable to plug into the phone system at your destination.
